Soot was born in Lavasteam. Being orphaned at a young age along with the harsh living conditions of Lavasteam, Soot was forced to live on the streets for most of his life and made a small living off selling scrap materials for a while, before eventually becoming a chimneysweeper.

Unsure if they were there as forced labourers, or if they simply enjoyed doing it, Soot ended up on good terms with them regardless. He would often share his lunch with the Bakis and they would keep each other company during their time sweeping.
