Wouldn't "Maa Ree" be said to sound like the name "Marie" or does that not matter?

Personally, I wouldn't put it in there, because the intended pronunciation is "maa-ree", with a long "ah" sound, not "mar-ee" (like marie) - the emphasis should be on the a, not the e.

I was also thinking it sounded similar to the name "Maria" , "MUH-REE", but I appreciate the feedback. Drawn to Life likes to use quirky spelling or spell out actual names but Mari is the name standing out for being spelled like a real-life name pronounced like "Mary" but the character's given name is pronounced different.
