Erlanger is a friend of Ho'aliona who agreed to become Click's Secretary of Foreign Affairs when Ho'aliona left Raporia. He is familiar with Creusa and Maradyn, though the extent of his knowledge is unknown.

Erlanger is introduced as Ho'aliona's friend, and he takes over as Click's Secretary of Foreign Affairs. Watching Ho'aliona take off, Erlanger remarks that they are prepared to never return, Click's cabinet returns to their office. When they arrive, Virgil, Creusa, and Lavinia are waiting for them, and Erlanger mouths "It's me now" to Creusa. When Virgil tells Click and his cabinet about his terms for Ho'aliona's expedition, Erlanger urges them to agree to the terms, seemingly scared of what would happen if they didn't.
